Sorting Rocks

This Blogpost will help you to understand how to sort Rocks by their qualities.

Please read the article linked below and respond to the following questions.

Sorting Minerals

Please respond by telling me what method of identifying minerals you think gives us the most information, and explain to me why do you think this.

My favorite way of identifying rocks is to use the hardness. This is because rocks can vary so greatly in this quality, raging from Sandstone, which falls apart with light touches, to Diamonds, which are the hardest mineral known on earth. I also find this aspect to be interesting because it shows you how much stronger some Rocks can be than originally though, and vice versa.

If you would like extra practice in identifying Rocks you can also complete the activity below:

You will need to go on a NATURE  HUNT for a total of 3 different rocks. This nature hunt can take place anywhere you are comfortable (i.e. your backyard or the school playground). Do your best to find a collection of different sizes, shapes, textures, and colors.

Please Identify the 3 Rocks you collected and describe what you see and feel, otherwise known as the minerals physical properties (i.e. texture, color, luster).

Ms. Hibl's Rocks:

1. My first rock is the color black and is about 2 inches thick (so not very big). My rock has sharp edges the point out. My rock is also slightly shiny/sleek and very smooth.

2. My second rock is the color orange/white(like sand) and it is pretty flat but about 3 inches long. My rock has rounded edges and is very smooth. My rock is not very shiny and loses some small sediments on my finger when I rub it.

3. My rock is black and is very small. My rock has very rough edges that jut out all around its small surface. My rock is not very strong and can be broken apart very easily.

4. My rock is as large as my hand and it is dark grey with a light grey strip through part of it. My rock has  mostly smooth edges but has been broken apart as has a rough side where it is broken. My rock is not very shiny but has some dots in it that sparkle in the sun.

5. My rock is white and very small and round.  My rock does not break very easily. My rock is very smooth but is not shiny.
